Upper & Lower Tamar Lakes
	click to enlarge   Travelling south on the Atlantic Highway, turn off left to the Tamar Lakes, just as you leave Kilkhampton, there are brown directional signs. The lakes offer some superb walks in the quiet countryside surrounding the water, a picnic area, children's play area, camping facilities (must be pre-booked), sailing and fishing. During the season, there is a pleasant tearoom. The lakes   click to enlarge provide a haven for wildlife and, in particular, over wintering birds. The nearby meadows provide excellent habitat cover for many species of butterfly The source of the River Tamar is close by and feeds the lakes. The lower lake was built in the 1820's to feed the Bude Canal, the upper lake was completed in the 1970's and is the water supply for much of the adjacent area of Devon and Cornwall.
